Pressure Sensitive Tape Council Honors Tape Week ‎2022 Presenter with Carl Dahlquist Award

(CHICAGO – May 26, 2022) – The Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PSTC), the leading North American trade association for pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape manufacturers and affiliate suppliers, named Dow Adhesives R&D Polymer Synthesis Chemist Joseph Binder, Ph.D., ‎as the recipient of the 2022 Carl Dahlquist Award. Dr. Binder received the award for his paper presentation at the inaugural Tape Week, which was held May 2–5, 2022, in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. PSTC will recognize Dr. Binder at Tape Week 2023.

PSTC presents the Dahlquist Award annually to a researcher advancing ‎adhesive tape technology. A panel of judges evaluates a range of criteria including ‎originality, scientific contribution, quality of visuals and presentation quality. The eponymous innovator Carl Dahlquist developed the Dahlquist criterion of tack, which ‎determines if the modulus value of a material is low enough to be considered a pressure sensitive ‎adhesive.‎

Dr. Binder’s paper, “Designed Polymer Particle Architectures for Waterborne Acrylic Pressure Sensitive Adhesives,” identifies opportunities to improve the adhesion/cohesion balance of waterborne pressure sensitive adhesives. He joined Dow Adhesives R&D in 2015 as a polymer synthesis chemist at Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Dow, he worked at BP in bio-based chemicals and fuels research. He completed a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2009 and a B.S. from Illinois Wesleyan University.
